Cobalt, a potent coloring oxide, imparts a vibrant blue hue to glazes at all temperatures, turning black in high concentrations. As the most powerful ceramic colorant, it remains stable in most systems, commonly added at 1% or lower. Similar to copper, it exhibits active melting in oxidation. When mixed in a high percentage with a fluid frit base, it crystallizes completely during cooling. While potters have historically used cobalt as a body and slip stain, achieving consistent results without fired specks posed challenges.
