Silica, commonly known as Quartz, is a vital component in ceramic glazes as it acts as a glass former. It is a naturally occurring mineral and the most abundant one on Earth. The crystals within flint are exceptionally small, rendering the mineral opaque and giving it a glassy or waxy appearance upon fracture. This is commonly used in clay bodies.
